The cold hand of death ripped through the country in the first 10 days of the New Year. In four days, the nation lost three prominent Nigerians. Former Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, and Prof. Duro Ajeyalemi of Science Education, UNILAG died through complications from the novel coronavirus while Otunba Eddie Aderinokun, writer, journalist, and culture patron died after a brief illness at 80.
The death of Yoruba actress, Folake Aremu popular known as Orisabunmi days earlier and the sudden demise of two younger siblings three days later has spooked fear amongst many. Veteran Nollywood actor, Jim Lawson Maduike and popular pastor, Yinka Akinbami died over the weekend.
The arrest of activist, former presidential candidate, and publisher of New York-based news portal, Sahara Reporters, Owoyele Sowore brought critics to the doorstep of the President. Many criticized the move by the police, the most vocal was former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili who stressed that Sowore’s arrest will only cause more violence.
The coronavirus continued to wreck homes like it did in 2020. Between Monday, January 4, to Thursday, January 7, more than 30 persons lost their lives while almost 4,000 were infected. This period witnessed the highest infection rate in a long time as thousands were infected within the mentioned period.
While Nigerians are still waiting on the Federal Government to quicken the purchase of the vaccine, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar was in Dubai Wednesday, January 6 for a jab of the Pfizer vaccine.
The virus remains a major threat in Nigeria as we continually get news of casualties. So far, 99,063 Nigerians have been affected by the virus, while, 1,330 have died. Due to the rising cases of the second wave of coronavirus infections in Nigeria, the National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on coronavirus, Sani Aliyu, has said that a fresh lockdown may be required.
